Montreal, October 21, 2013. : Canadian Rights in Quebec (“CRITIQ”) is gratified by the Federal Government`s intervention in Keith Henderson`s challenge to Quebec`s Bill 99. Lawyer Brent Tyler, who has kept this challenge alive for over a decade, is to be commended as well. Bill 99 is a direct challenge to the Clarity Act, the will of Parliament and laws of Canada. It is of course the right of the government of Quebec to challenge that Act in the courts. But the Marois government oversteps its bounds in saying that only Quebecers can decide Quebec`s future. The question of secession involves Quebec`s responsibilities and liabilities to Canada. Quebec has no moral or legal superiority over Canada. Any decision on the independence of Quebec must be agreed to by all stakeholders in Canada. The rules as set out by the Clarity Act should be respected and it is CRITIQ`s fervent hope that the Superior Court upholds the challenge to Bill 99.
Canadian Rights in Québec (“CRITIQ”) is a Québec-based organization dedicated to the protection in Québec of those rights and freedoms vested in all Canadian citizens by our nation’s constitution, as well as by those international conventions by which Canada is bound.
